A Family For Every Child

August 2010

Skyler

Age 11

Skyler

Meet Skyler, a beautiful outgoing 11-year-old with a passion for music and horses. Skyler is eager to find her adoptive family, especially if they have horses or are interested in supporting her love of riding. Skyler has two guinea pigs that she cannot imagine life without; so her new family must be open to three new additions and not just one.

Skyler also loves to swim and loves working outdoors. She is currently helping her foster father landscape the backyard and he is amazed that she works so hard each day moving rocks and trees, installing the new pond and gardening. Since Skyler is a tween, she has a fun blend of interests that range from playing with Pet Shop toys and dolls to watching The Twilight movies and writing in her journal. Skyler's teacher describes her as his most fashionable student this year; she has a keen interest in clothing and is very particular about her appearance.

Skyler has long chestnut brown hair that has a little bit of wave to it, hazel blue eyes and an adorable sprinkling of freckles across her nose and cheeks. Perhaps the most striking thing about Skyler's appearance is her smile which is somehow amusing and reserved at the same time.

Skyler will need a family with parents who are able to remain calm, even when she attempts to provoke reactions which she can be adept at doing. She will need a home with rules and limits that are calmly and predictably enforced in an emotionally neutral manner. Skyler has trouble naming her feelings as she has 'stuffed' them for so long and will need caregivers who will patiently but age-appropriately name what she is feeling (until she begins to recognize these feelings independently).

She needs a family who can continue to support her love of the outdoors and can continue to engage her in an active lifestyle. Skyler's new family will be making a big investment of time and energy as her initial months will likely be difficult. However, once breaking through her walls and barriers they will experience a delightful girl who will enhance their life with entertainment, creativity and a wholehearted commitment to her new family.

Karvyier

Age 11

 Karvyier

Karvyier. who prefers to be called Karvy, is a caring young man who is looking for his forever family. Karvy has become an exceptional artist and is enthusiastic about the Japanese drawing techniques he has learned from one of his teacher's. Teachers and other school staff enjoy Karvy and report that he is very witty.

Karvy really enjoys most outdoor sports and also loves to garden. He will benefit from a family that can be actively involved with him, and gives him new opportunities. He has been able to develop a very good relationship with his foster mom. This is a big deal considering his general distrust of new people, and it shows that he has the capacity to build healthy relationships with parent figures.

Being willing to participate with Karvy in family counseling during his transition will be a wonderful way for Karvy's adoptive parents to demonstrate their love and commitment to him. Karvy will need a family that can be patient with him in this area, and a family that can love him for who he is.

Web Writing

Need written, research and collection of information for our web pages and family resources.

In the best of all worlds, we would get a couple of articles a week for each of the 3 websites. Articles topics could be things relevant to each of the websites.

For Lane County (AFFEC), we could research news articles about DHS-related topics in the Register Guard, about Oregon Adoption, etc. For NWHG the Oregonian, the Seattle Times, and Anchorage papers might give some guidance to articles of interest.

For the National site, we have to pick topics of national interest such as topics on NACAC. We could write up our expanding coverage of kids for adoption.

If you think you could help, contact us today!

Izaiah

Age 4

Izaiah is a delightful little boy with a smile that will light up a room and a hug that will warm your heart. He loves interacting with adults and climbing up onto a lap for some one-on-one time. A love of numbers and counting on fingers or clocks can keep him busy for a short time until he is onto something else. Some of his other interests are playing with blocks, putting together puzzles, or drawing with markers. He is a child with a love for the outdoors and will take any opportunity to go for walks or play at the park. He is simply a joy to be around.

Izaiah will do best in a home where there are no other children or older children. He will need a parent or parents who have knowledge or are willing to obtain appropriate knowledge and access services.

This foursome of happy children consists of Madisen, 12, Chase, 9, Hayden, 7, and Jaydah, 4. The children would love a family who they can rely on. They would like both parents to be respectable, trustworthy and easygoing. Spending a lot of quality family time would be a dream come true for them.

Chase likes to ride his bike, play basketball, board games, and video games. He enjoys working with his hands and his favorite art medium is clay.

AFFEC Announcement!

At A Family For Every Child, we have just joined a national competition to help more children find forever families. We have submitted a grant through the Pepsi Refresh Project, and your votes determine the winners. We would greatly appreciate your vote!

Vote at: refresheverything.com/foreverfamilies

You can vote once each day all month long. It will only take two minutes of your time and anyone 13 and older is eligible to vote. These are the types of projects that are essential to allowing us to help the children, so please help us spread the word!

Professional Bulletin Photos

photo

By knowing how important a good photo is to recruitment, AFFEC is now offering to take professional photos for child bulletins. We are committed to a two week turn around (although caseworker or foster parent schedules may make this more difficult).

We have developed our statewide list of photographers that can (within a week of our call) photograph a child or sibling group. Within a week of images being taken, we will email the .jpg images to caseworkers. We then store all images for further recruitment tools if requested by the caseworker. All that is needed is the referral form linked below:

AFFEC Upcoming Events!

A Family For Every Child is pleased to announce our first auction being held November 10, 2010 at the Valley River Inn, in Eugene, Oregon. The event will be a celebration of National Adoption Month.

What we need you to do: think of friends, family or the businesses you patronize who can donate an item or service to our auction. Can you, your family, or a friend's place of employment donate a service or item? Start talking and thinking auction!

Do you have a hobby, craft or talent you are hiding away you can share or donate? Can you provide the name of a contact for your place of employment's HR, Marketing or Community Outreach Department? Does your company have season tickets to sporting events or the arts community or a company suite they can donate?

Plan on attending the event: Invite your friends and family to hold the date, Wednesday, November 10th for a night of food, fun and fabulous shopping. The auction is a fantastic means for businesses to advertise to our community and reach out to families and supporters who care deeply for children in need.

We look forward to the event bringing awareness to our mission of finding families for children as well as raising much needed funds to continue our life changing work.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Kassey Carter-Young, Director of Development at 541.554.7213 or

kassey@afamilyforeverychild.org.

Mentoring

Mentor Volunteer

AFFEC provides many services to children in Foster Care.  Our programs and services fill specific needs for children in the foster care system. This month we are highlighting our Mentor Program which has matched over 100 children with mentors.

Our Mentor Program is a result of the outpouring of support from community members three years ago for three special teens featured in the Heart Gallery. Currently we have over 50 youth/mentor pairs, meeting and interacting at least 10 hours a month, forming strong bonds and providing life skills.

Our mentors are dedicated to investing their time in their youth, to instill independence, confidence and everyday skills.

In recent research published by Child Trends, "Mentoring: A Promising Strategy for Youth Development," found that youth who participate in mentoring relationships experience a number of positive benefits. In terms of educational achievement, mentored youth have better attendance, a better chance of going on to higher education; and better attitudes towards school. In terms of health and safety, mentoring appears to help prevent substance abuse and reduce some negative youth behaviors.

On the social and emotional development front, taking part in mentoring promotes positive social attitudes and relationships. Mentored youth tend to trust their parents more and communicate better with them. They also feel they get more emotional support from their friends than do youth who are not mentored.

Cost to provide this service is approximately $150 per year per child served.

Periodically, we have special projects or needs that come as a result of us reacting to a pressing need.  We are currently fundraising to help provide mentor matching for the summer and fall of 2010. If you would like to help us meet this need, please contact Kassey Carter-Young at 541-554-7213.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

RSS feed- Our cliental and potential parents want and desire more contact from us.  One way we would like to do this is to let them sign up for RSS feeds that will alert them when new children are posted, or something changes in the posting of a child they are interested in.  No matter where you are located, if you have experience with RSS Feeds we can use you!

SalesForce expert-  Salesforce.com is our database we use to successfully match children and parents. We are always in need of volunteers that have experience with Salesforce to  help with programming, searches, targeted outreach and more. If you know Salesforce, we need you!
