Lane County CASA ~ Court Appointed Special Advocate
CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. CASA of Lane County was founded in 1994 to train community citizens as volunteers to advocate for the best interests of children who have been abused or neglected and are under the protection of the Juvenile Court.
When children are removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect, they enter a complex and unfamiliar world of caseworkers, temporary homes, and attorneys. For more than half of these children, all of this happens before their sixth birthday. CASA volunteers are trained to advocate for these kids, working to ensure that decisions made are in the child's best interest. The CASA is often the only steady presence in the child's life during this tumultuous time.

State Fact Sheets for Grandparents and other relatives raising children---More than six million children - approximately 1 in 12 - are living in households headed by grandparents (4.5 million children) or other relatives (1.5 million children). In many of these homes, grandparents (approximately 2.4 million) and other relatives are taking on primary responsibility for the children’s needs. Often they assume this responsibility without either of the child’s parents present in the home.
